Can I ask an AI about my own boat?

The Captain · Ask anythingInstead of ChatGPT· Current as of 26 September 2026

Yes. The Captain is an AI that knows your boat: her instruments, manuals, crew, maintenance and the forecast for where she is. Ask a question in plain words and it answers from all of it.

It passes each question to the right crew member, the Weather Officer for the weather, the Chief Engineer for systems, the Purser for manuals, and puts the answer together. You can also ask it in WhatsApp, and it puts together a briefing morning, midday and evening, which you can ask for at any time.

What it does

  • Answers from your boat’s own data, manuals and history
  • Weather, systems, manuals, maintenance and crew in one conversation
  • Attach a photo and ask about it
  • Remembers what you tell it about the boat
  • Ask it in WhatsApp as well as in the app
  • A briefing morning, midday and evening, or whenever you ask

Try the Purser with your own manuals: the same AI, answering from documents you upload. No account needed.

In June 2026 the internet and several AC circuits went off aboard. Asked why, the Captain answered with a minute-by-minute timeline from the boat’s own electrical data: a large load at 22:28 took the draw over 3,000 W, and shore power collapsed at 22:53. In September, told that 161 litres were used from Bermagui to Sydney, it worked out the real burn rate, 6.9 litres an hour, and now plans every passage with it.

The Captain on Shimbiri, September 2026: 161 litres used from Bermagui to Sydney becomes a measured 6.9 L/h burn rate, saved for every future passage, with the range it gives on full tanks.

What you need

Works from a phone or PC. Answers about the boat’s live systems need the Chief Engineer pack aboard.
