Can I see the ships around me and whether any is a risk?

The Navigator · Charts & routesInstead of MarineTraffic· Current as of 26 September 2026

Yes. Shimbiri shows every AIS target your boat receives, on the chart and in chat, with its bearing, range, speed and closest point of approach.

When a ship becomes a collision risk it raises an alert in the app, even in the middle of another conversation.

What it does

  • Every AIS target in range, on the chart
  • Bearing, range, speed and course for each
  • Closest point of approach and time to it
  • Threat levels, and an alert in the app when a ship closes
  • Ask in chat: what is around me?

A real answer off the NSW coast, 20 September 2026: sixteen targets, each with bearing, range, speed and closest approach, and no collision threat.

Seen at sea

Off the NSW coast on 20 September 2026, asked for all the AIS targets around, Shimbiri listed sixteen, from the fast ferry Narooma 9.9 nm west to the ships at anchor in the queue to the north, each with its closest approach. Later that day, entering Sydney, a question about fuel was interrupted with a close-quarters alert for a vessel 0.11 nm away, closest approach in about four minutes.

What you need

Needs the Chief Engineer pack aboard with an AIS receiver. It shows the ships your boat can hear by radio, not a worldwide map.
